Feline idiopathic cystitis, which accounts for more than 50% of cases of FLUTD (Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease) and is a consequence of alterations of the urothelium and its functional properties of semi-permeability. These changes induce inflammation in the submucosa (C fibers) with stimulation of the CNS and involvement of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis.
The urothelium is naturally covered by a layer of glycosaminoglycans (GAG) that protects against bacterial adhesion and acts as a barrier against contact with harmful substances present in the urine. The loss of the integrity of the GAGs and thus the protective layer is at the origin of the contact between the sensitive nerve fibers and the noxious constituents in the urine.
